Today, I am wearing the hat of a SDHS Alumni Choir member. I have fond memories when the Hilltop Choir practiced tirelessly during the fall months, followed by a Holiday Season filled with dozens of performances at social and civic functions around San Diego.
In addition to performing in the Russ Auditorium for students and staff, one of the most memorable experiences was our annual concert at the Hotel Del Coronado. Prior to our performance in the magnificent Crown Room, the entire choir was served a multi-course meal in the Ballroom.
After our wonderful meal, we all donned our choir robes, walked across the lobby to the Crown Room where we entertained the dining patrons as they enjoyed their holiday meal.
Yes, those were the days when music was included in the school’s curriculum of elective classes. Today, San Diego’s High School’s Choir (aka re[CHOIR]ed) is an ASB “Club” that meets twice a week, after school, to practice and rehearse.
These dedicated students fundraise during the year to pay for sheet music, accompanists, transportation, club t-shirts and fees for music festivals. ASB fundraisers cannot be used to pay for the annual stipend ($8,100.00) for their choir director, Catherine Bishop.
Funding for Catherine’s services must come from other sources including Alumni Choir members, classmates and individuals who want to continue their support of these extraordinary students who have come together to create an excellent SDHS choir.
Thank you to those who contributed last year. We raised $2,000.00! Let’s do it again!
In 2016, SDHS Re-Choired was invited by Board of Supervisor Chairman Ron Roberts to perform at the SD County State of the Union Address on Feb 25th @6pm The Hall of Champions – Balboa Park.
In Spring 2015, several members of the Hilltop Choir joined re[CHOIR]ed’s Spring Concert to sing songs from 1915 to celebrate Balboa Park’s Centennial Celebration of the Panama-California Exposition. The performance was a huge success but rehearsing with these young, talented “kids” was the most rewarding experience for us “old folks” This is just one way the great classes of SDHS supported and gave back to their alma mater.
